The roads and highways are shared by a lot of different vehicles – passenger cars, motorcycles, large trucks, buses. And city streets can also feature pedestrians and cyclists. There are so many people using the roads to get where they need to go. According to the FMCSA, over 12 million commercial motor vehicles are registered to operate on the roads. Naturally, trucks and buses are an essential part of keeping the nation running as far as transporting goods and people. But it’s important to keep the roads safe for everyone, and that’s what the FMCSA’s Our Roads, Our Safety campaign is all about. We’ll explain how that works.
What is the Our Roads, Our Safety campaign?
The FMCSA has a big goal: reduce the number of crashes involving CMVs. (And in turn, reducing the number of injuries and fatalities.) Our Roads, Our Safety supports that goal because the campaign involves the FMCSA partnering with other organizations to raise awareness about the importance of sharing the roads safely with all vehicles and people.
The thing is that trucks and buses are much, much larger than passenger vehicles. That means that these vehicles present additional dangers and challenges on top of the hazards associated with driving. For drivers who have never taken the helm of a truck or bus, these hazards might not be immediately evident or easy to visualize. For example, trucks are not easy to maneuver. They’re extremely tall. They take a long time to stop. And they have a lot of pretty serious blind spots. The drivers of passenger cars, pedestrians, cyclists, etc. need to be aware of these things, which is why Our Roads, Our Safety seeks to educate the public about it.
(And Our Roads, Our Safety also strives to educate CMV drivers about these things as well so they know the importance of being aware of the unique hazards of driving a truck at all times. They need to know that passenger cars and pedestrians might not know the dangers of trucks and therefore not act safely around them.)
That’s why Our Roads, Our Safety is geared towards educating everyone. It provides different points of view and provides tips that are tailored towards different road users. They have different sets of information concerning safety for CMV drivers, passenger vehicles, and cyclists/pedestrians. The purpose is to educate each group about the others in order to keep everyone safer.
As we mentioned earlier, the FMCSA’s goal is to reduce the number of crashes involving large trucks. (Which is all a part of keeping the roads safety for all drivers.) Our Roads, Our Safety is a campaign that furthers that goal by educating different groups of drivers on the road.
