What is the FMCSA Portal?

The FMCSA portal is maintained by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and offers motor carriers and other involved parties access to a variety of forms of information. If you are a carrier, ship freight, carry passengers, or do other commerce on the roadways, then you can use the FMCSA Portal to check your official safety records and other details the agency maintains.

What is the FMCSA Portal?

Each entity has a single password and identification for the FMCSA portal; you can sign up online for a user ID and password that will grant you access to the system. While FMCSA access is a convenience right now, eventually portal accounts and access will be required of anyone who is regulated by the FMCSA.

There are two different types of portal accounts and access types, as detailed below:

Official Company Account.

This FMCSA portal account is issued to a person charged with being the company official for a brand or business. If your business has a USDOT number, then you can gain access to the portal via a company official account. Each business is a separate entity and you can only have one company official account ID and password per brand. This type of account is for those that have a leadership role in the company and allows for changes to be made, forms to be completed, and requests to be filed.

To request access via an official company account, you need to sign up using the PIN number that is attached to your USDOT number. Once you have this information you can request a company account for your business. Since this account is owned by an entity, not a single individual, it stays with the company.

If you do not yet have a USDOT number PIN, then you can request one online at the FMCSA USDOT PIN Request page. Your PIN will be emailed to you in a similar process to a password recovery for an online account.

Company Information Account.

This FMCSA portal account allows you to view your brand’s information, see safety and other ratings, and view everything the FMCSA has to share about your brand. While a company information account allows you to view these things, you can’t make changes to the account or request additional details. These steps have to be taken from the official company account for your brand.

Understanding how the FMCSA portal works and the two different types of access ensures you set your own account up properly and that the people with important roles in your company can access your details as needed. It also ensures all of your business information is up to date and that you always know where you stand with the USDOT and FMCSA, simply by logging in via the online portal.
