- Conway was founded as a product of one of the oldest city plans in South Carolina. Kings town, or Kingston, was the original city founded in Royal Gov. Robert Johnson's Township Scheme. After the Revolutionary War, citizens agreed to rename the city after one of their war heroes, Robert Conway.
- The town was then called Conwayborough and then renamed to just Conway in 1883.
